SFL new boys, Annan Athletic, share town with Gretna

Hosting by DistantPixThe biggest new in Scottish Football this summer has been the introduction of Annan Athletic into the SFL. This comes after Gretna were forced to call it a day at the end of last season, having suffered from months of money troubles and administrator involvement.Luckily for Gretna fans the team will continue to play but at non-league level, after a series of meetings in the town. It’s not all good news for fans of the once Scottish Cup runners up. Home games will be played…wait for it…in Annan! Within the space of a fortnight, Annan has gone from having zero league teams to having one and a dropout.

This reminds me of last seasons fiasco, where Gretna’s home games were played 70 miles away in Motherwell. Okay, this years 7 miles isnt as bad, and its nowhere near the same scale of US basketball team New Orleans Jazz’s thousand mile move, becoming the Utah Jazz, but why call the team Gretna if for the second year in a row, doesnt play in Gretna.

Anyway, congratulations to Annan Athletic for their well deserved admission into the SFl and best of luck in the 2008/09 season.
